BOOMj Expert: The Yoga Challenge

Written By: Susan Ward

Baby Boomers are challenged by the life changes we’re experiencing. Our physical bodies are changing, our appearance, health, changes in family situations, births of grandchildren, deaths of parents, spouses and friends, and more. These changes can be hard to deal with. All of us have our challenges these days, and when we’re in the midst of difficulties, sometimes it’s very hard to keep a positive perspective.

One of the great gifts of yoga is that it teaches us that within each of us is great strength, power, beauty and joy. Regardless of outer appearances or circumstances, our inner self is strong and perfect. It remains untouched by disease, weakness, sadness and grief. Our bodies are only temporary, while the eternal animating power of the Universe that resides at our core within us remains untouched.

Life’s challenges can be a catalyst to reconnect us with our inner strength, power and perfection. Our yoga practice can be a microcosm of how handle those challenges. What do you do when you are challenged? Do you push yourself too hard? Do you get angry or scared? Quit? Get lazy or competitive? Watching how we respond to challenges in our yoga practice can be a mirror into how we respond to life’s greater challenges.

A yoga practice is an opportunity to choose how you will approach a life challenge. What is your attitude as you do your practice? Each pose is a choice. Do you choose a positive and joyful attitude? Strength over weakness? Power over intimidation? Gratitude over fear? Introspection over grief? Watch yourself carefully and your yoga practice will teach you about how you approach life.

All of our life experiences are an opportunity to grow and learn. We’re not given challenges without the ability to handle them. We all have the strength within us to rise to our challenges and become a more enlightened in the process.

As Boomers, we have the opportunity to set examples as life moves around and through us. We can express power, strength and gratitude when life gets rough. Yoga can teach us to stay centered, peaceful and graceful in the most difficult circumstances. We can do this.
